Tom Philpot was sat waiting at his study table for the allotted 3pm to arrive. He had to admit this was a first for him. He’d been to a million auditions, dozens of face-to-face interviews and two telephone interviews, but he’d never been asked to interview for a job via Zoom before, and he had to admit to being a little nervous. What do you wear? What background should there be behind his head – business like or the cool family guy that he thought he was? Or promo shots from previous work? Do you play it cool like you do this every day, or be honest and say you’ve never done it by Zoom before? He’d never heard of this production company before but that wasn’t unusual, they popped up and went bust all the time, which reminded him, his wife had told him to make sure he had his money as soon as possible just in case they did go tits up. He liked the premise of the show and frankly, anyone that was offering up a £1m prize had to have pretty good backing. And above all, he needed the job – desperately.

The life of a jobbing actor cum presenter cum MC was not the glamourous one he’d anticipated. Like literally thousands before him, and no doubt thousands to follow, his was a life of 95% of the time effectively being unemployed. Yes he could earn £3,000 for a night’s work if he was really, really lucky but that was a) unusual and b) likely to be the only money he’d earn that month. And right now, thanks to the failure of the show he’d been working on (a musical version of the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel - which he now accepted was a stupid idea in the first place, but getting the lead role had clouded his judgement) meant that he’d gone the last three months with no income at all. Julie, his till now ever loyal wife, was even suggesting he get a ‘proper’ job in a bar or restaurant or driving a Tesco.com white van until the next big break came along. Yeah right!

So the ad for a presenter on a new Channel 4 show aiming at creating a cult status, iconic new ‘reality’ show was too tempting for Tom to ignore – and being invited to a Zoom interview was why he was now sat there in his study staring at his laptop and watching the time tick excruciatingly slowly towards 3 o’clock.
